Class 4 News Update November 2010

The children really enjoyed our last topic entitled The Home Front. All the children did some fantastic work in class and they particularly enjoyed their day at Bankfield Museum where they took part in a workshop entitled Churchill’s Children.

The children had great fun. They were all very well behaved and took part enthusiastically in all activities. They learnt a great deal and had fun doing so. Here are just a few of the photographs taken that day.

If you would like to see more pictures taken on our visit you may come and see more in our classroom display. We can assure you that you will not have seen your children looking quite the same before!

This term’s topic is entitled Where in the world? The class are already very enthusiastic about the topic and have started bringing in items to make a display about countries from around the world. The children have selected countries to focus on, in groups, and are busy researching them. We have already completed lots of map work, as we will be covering a lot of geography based activities. We are about to move on to investigating foods from around the world. We will be tasting different foods and making some speciality foods. As you can imagine the children are very excited about this! We would greatly appreciate your help in gathering items from around the world to put on display-including artefacts and newspaper articles.

The children are enjoying working in our regular sets for numeracy. They are also keen to take part in our weekly sets for literacy and reading.

Recently the children have taken part in some exciting P.E. activities. They have had a Dance Mat session. Some children had obviously experience of Dance Mat and were real stars. All children greatly enjoyed the session as these photos reveal. We think we could have some dancing stars of the future. Strictly Come Dancing-watch out!

With regard to swimming, we are really looking forward to going swimming at the new pool starting on 22nd November. Regular P.E. lessons continue to be on Wednesday but please could you make sure that your child has indoor and outdoor kit in school at all times, as we often do extra exciting sessions, such as our Dance Mat lesson.

Thank you.

                                   Welcome to Class 4!

Welcome to a new school year and a new class. Class 4 is taught on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays by Mrs Oddy and on Thursdays and Fridays by Mrs Knapper.

The children have settled in really well and are very excited by our topic. Our topic this half term is The Home Front. We started by looking at the children’s own home lives - and we have to say that their work has made really interesting reading! The whole class have produced some lovely work and each child already has a piece of written work and a picture on display. The classroom is already looking really colourful.

We have now moved on to look at life for children in World War Two. We have arranged a trip to tie in with our topic. This will take place on 11th October and will involve a visit to Bankfield Museum to take part in an activity day entitled Churchill’s Children. Children will dress up and take part in many different activities based around the war years. Further details of the trip will follow.

Can you help?

Children have already been inspired by our activities and have begun bringing in artefact from the war. Although we have a collection of artefacts in school it is extremely interesting for children to see and discuss more personal mementoes and stories, so any help in this respect would be greatly appreciated. Any items sent into school will be treated with care and respect. We also have a display of newspaper article related to the war. At the moment there are many features centred around World War 11 in the press and any contributions for our display will be gratefully received.

It would also be really useful and informative if we could invite someone local into school to talk to the class about their personal experiences in the war. If you know anyone who could visit, please let us know.

Children all have a reading book and a library book. Reading books should be returned to school daily and library books can be changed weekly. We do appreciate all your help listening to the children read daily. Thank you.

Children also have a Spellings and Times Tables book. Tables and spellings for our weekly tests are in these books. Children are tested on Wednesdays. Please could you ensure that their Spellings and Times Tables books are returned on Wednesdays so that they have them to record new test information in. At the moment our spelling tests are based on commonly used words and are used as refresher for the class as they are words which they should be able to spell by year 4.
