Class Newsletter- updated 5th June

Yo ho ho! updated 10th June

Last week we began our new topic- Pirates!!

We have really enjoyed learning about the ships pirates’ used and even made our own pirate ships. All of the children have made a sloop- the ship favoured by pirates

because of its speed. They even came up with their own names for their ships!

Here are some pictures of them. You can see the children took great care when decorating and constructing them- some even have pirates onboard! See if you can spot them!

Tick Tock

In Numeracy we have been working on telling the time focusing on- o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past. We have even been changing between analogue and digital times! It would be great if you could get the children to practise their skills at home, to reinforce the work we have been doing in class.

What am I?   Updated 23rd May 2008

We have spent lots of time this week looking at riddles. We then wrote a class riddle- see if you can solve it!

                                                 What am I?

I move forwards.

I’m usually round, but I come in different shapes.

I talk in my own way, but I can only say two words.

I like to hang about.

I have three hands, sometimes two.

The children worked in pairs to write their own riddle about an animal

of their choice. They worked hard to include descriptive language

and to include tricky clues, so the reader didn’t solve the riddle

straight away. In our ICT lesson we typed up our poems in

Microsoft Word and concentrated on changing the font: size, colour

and type and setting our work out correctly.

Click on the links below to see some examples of the children’s work.

New topics

After the holidays we will be starting our new topics. In Science we will be learning about living things within our local environment and the differences between them. We will also begin a new topic on Pirates! More information will follow next half term.

Have a wonderful holiday!!

Out and about!    Updated 15th May 2008

We have had an exciting week in Class 2!

On Wednesday we went out to explore the school grounds and our new nature trail. We were collecting information about the the different types of animals we could see. The children had to record how many animals they saw in a tally chart. The children particularly enjoyed the nature trail, as we found lots of animals lurking under stones and pieces of wood!

In Literacy we have begun a new poetry unit! We are currently looking at tongue twisters and had lots of fun this afternoon, reading different tongue twisters as fast as we could! Matthew impressed the whole class with his reading of Betty Botter- he can almost talk as fast as I can!

Summer is here!

We have had some wonderful weather recently and the children are spending more time outside. Could you please ensure that they have sun hats and sun cream, which

                      is labelled, thank you!

Key Stage 1 tests

Towards the end of Year 2, the children to have to complete tests in reading, writing and mathematics. The tests are carried out as informally as possible and the children have nothing to worry about. We will begin the tests next week and they will continue after the holidays. They are much more informal than the tests currently been carried out in Key Stage 2 and the children will often be withdrawn in groups to undertake them. If you do have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Distressing Times! Updated 2nd May 2008

I can't believe how much work we have done this week! The children will need an extra day off to recover!

In Literacy we have been busy writing postcards and stories about going on holiday. The children had to imagine they were a FunnyBones character and write a postcard home to describe where they had been and what they had done! They then decided on their own holiday destination for the characters and wrote a story about their adventures. They all produced some fantastic work, but I do have to mention Aidan who got a Star of the Week award for his imaginative use of language in his postcard and Holly who wrote such an entertaining story, I couldn't stop laughing!

In History we imagined we were in London at the time of the fire and talked about what we could see, hear, smell and feel. The children then wrote a diary, just like Samuel Pepys did, to explain their experience of the fire.

We wrote up our diaries today and everyone had a brilliant time staining their paper with tea bags and tearing and crumpling it up, to make it appear as if it was very old and had been rescued from the fire

Here are some pictures of the class creating their diaries.
