Topic

The aliens have landed in Class 1!

We have a spaceship in our role-play area with all sorts of alien masks and even silver moon boots! We have lots of alien stories to read and we will be writing our own towards the end of the topic. During the last week of term there will also be an alien day to celebrate the topic. We will come to school dressed as aliens, eat alien food and take part in some alien activities. It’s sure to be a fun day! Tuesday 23rd March.

This term has got off to a disrupted start but finally things seem to have returned to normal. Let’s hope the snow has gone for good!!!

We are looking at traditional tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, 3 Billy Goats Gruff, 3 Little Pigs, Cinderella, etc in literacy. The children have been getting to know the language used such as; once upon a time and happily ever after. We’ve also been acting the stories out using props and puppets.

Our other topic work is about houses and homes. We’ve discussed all the different types of homes there are and we will be looking at homes and houses in the past and talking about how they are different to modern houses.

Our school trip is linked to these topics. The children will meet Cinderella and the Fairy Godmother in Shibden Hall. They will help Cinderella with all her jobs around the house and the Fairy Godmother will show them artefacts from the past and ask them to work out what they were for.

At the end of the day the children will help the Fairy Godmother cast a magic spell and Cinderella will appear in her ballgown ready to go and meet her Prince!!! It’s a lovely trip and the children get a lot out of it. Photos will be on the website ASAP after the trip.

Updated 17th September

This half term we are going to be doing a topic called

‘Globe Trotters’

We will be finding out about lots of different countries.

We will be

  • Finding out about where the class has travelled to.
  • Reading stories from around the world.
  • Looking at maps and atlases.
  • Singing songs and listening to music from other cultures.

In order to bring our topic alive it would be wonderful if the children could bring in any photos or artifacts they have from other countries.

Jack has already brought in a fan and Lana has brought a dress from Spain. Ruby has also shared with us some artifacts including a costume from Japan.

An information sheet about our class was sent home last week. However if you have any queries or questions about life in Year 1, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Reading books and/or word books have been sent home accompanied by a reading record book. Please write in a comment to let Mrs. Sweeney and I know how your child has done. Books will not be changed every day but we will try to change them as frequently as possible.
